Australian winemaking legend and sailing enthusiast Bob Oatley built Hamilton Island’s Qualia with architect Chris Beckingham, with the intention of creating a luxury resort that captured the beauty and essence of Australia or, more specifically, of the tropical outpost known as the Whitsunday Islands. A few years on and the resort has been as voted the Best Resort in the World in the 2012 Condé Nast Treveler Readers’ Choice Awards, which means it’s pretty damn spectacular.
The resort is on the northern-most tip of Hamilton Island, surrounded by beautiful views of the Great Barrier Reef and the smell of eucalyptus trees. For accommodation, there are 60 individually designed pavilions with sun decks and infinity plunge pools overlooking the sea. Perks include a library, brilliant sailing and boating opportunities as well as the chance to explore the island on a golf buggy. The resort also offers a range of wonderful luxury packages.
